In the early months of 2016, Chris Jericho was a fun-loving babyface character who tried to act like an obnoxious party host. The quirks of his gimmick were a throwback to the Y2J persona fans loved during the first few years of the new millennium. In 2016, it came across as old hat.

Since turning heel, Jericho has been rejuvenated as a performer. He really knows his role on WWE television, one mainly designed to try and get others over. As a part-timer these days, that's something Jericho has claimed on his podcast he has no problem with, and he was aware he needed to make the alignment change.

Talking to The International Business Times, Jericho said he had a lot of fun playing with the minds of fans earlier this year. Statements like 'Rooty Tooty Booty' came across as almost embarrassing, and the Canadian claims that's what he wanted fans to feel.

Subtly, he was sowing the seeds for a heel turn. There's something admirable about that, Jericho really put some thought into his eventual heel switch.
