10 Wrestling Facts We Didn't Know Last Week (June 19)
9. Jerry Lawler Feels Fledgling Stars Shouldn't Take Wrestling So Seriously
Having been part of the professional wrestling industry for over 40 years, Jerry 'The King' Lawler knows just a little thing or two about longevity. Realising long ago that his business was one that was image obsessed, Lawler even underwent plastic surgery on his face, in an attempt to stay looking youthful, but it's fair to say that age has started to catch up with the iconic announcer, something WWE seem to have concluded. By removing Lawler from the full time Monday Night Raw commentary team, and shifting him over to Smackdown, WWE appear to be slowly but surely waving goodbye to one of their more recognisable faces. The man has been announcing on WWE shows since the early-1990's, so it's perhaps stunning that he's still even on week-to-week television, given the quick turnover that usually occurs behind the announce desk. Speaking during an interview this week, 'The King' surmised that key to his longevity in wrestling was his ability to look at it not as something which defines his life, but as something which enhances it. Stating he still has as much fun now as he did in 70's, Lawler remarked that many young wrestlers don't seem to see the industry in the same light, and it hurts them in the long run.
