10 Wrestling Images That Will Make You Feel Really Old
5. Game Of Groans
Earlier this week, Triple H made a bunch of announcements about the upcoming WWE 2K17 game. The bottom line is that it's going to have a huge roster, different game modes, Brock Lesnar, NXT, Goldberg, downloadable content, and it'll probably do your laundry for you. Hardcore WWE gamers are excited.
That excitement, though, is nothing compared to what fans were feeling when WWF War Zone was coming out in 1998. It wasn't the first WWE video game by a longshot, but it was the first of its era. It had "realistic" graphics, not cartoonish ones, a huge roster of 18 wrestlers, all three of Mick Foley's personalities, commentary, and a create-a-wrestler feature. It was the ultimate WWE game for the time.
Oh, did I mention it was terrible? The actual game engine was so complicated and counterintuitive that there was a list in the game that would tell you what buttons you needed to press in order to do moves. Needless to say, those countless pauses made things a lot less fun in two-player mode.
It took WWE a couple more years to get things straight (see WrestleMania 2000), but you know what? Those of us who were in the target audience got this game, we loved it, and we played it constantly. It was just too early for us to know any better. Today, WWE puts out an annual game that would have given us all heart attacks in 1998.
