10 Wrestling Matches That Ruled With Builds That Sucked

1. Cody & Red Velvet Vs Shaq & Jade Cargill (AEW Dynamite, March 3 2021)

History may reflect the build to Shaq and Jade Cargill's bout with Cody and Red Velvet as being snake-bit, but that that does a disservice to the inexplicably lowkey tone the tale took until showtime.

Cargill debuted unannounced on the November 11th edition of AEW Dynamite, interrupting a Cody promo to challenge him on behalf of Shaq for reasons that were never fully fleshed out. She did such a stellar job of this that Brandi Rhodes felt moved to retort, causing need for a mixed tag match until her pregnancy removed her from the angle outright.

Before the Rhodes' baby news was revealed, she threw water in Shaq's face on December 9th in what appeared to be a transparent attempt at creating a meme along with some heat. The segment failed on both counts.

From there, the company virtually gave up promoting it beyond presenting the graphic itself. Was this all just to lower expectations for a match that ultimately boasted more fireworks than a literal Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch just days later? Generous perhaps, but the contest itself - like many genre classics - had entered the orbit of something very special about 10 seconds after the basketball icon hit the stage.
