10 Wrestling Mistakes & Botches That Became Storylines
4. Billy Kidman Knocks Out Chavo Guerrero
The Shooting Star Press makes an appearance again on this list for botches. It’s a move that can easily go wrong, after all, just look to Brock Lesnar’s sickening botched SSP on Kurt Angle in the main event of WrestleMania XIX.
This one involves cruiserweight pioneer Billy Kidman. One of the reasons WWE was so hesitant to let their highflyers fly in the mid-noughties was due to Billy Kidman’s horrible botch of his Shooting Star Press on Chavo Guerrero on an episode of SmackDown in 2004.
Kidman’s knee connected with Chavo’s head on the way down, causing a serious concussion. The move was banned shortly afterwards for a period of time, with Evan Bourne/Matt Sydal only being able to perform it years later after showcasing it on a crash pad before an event to WWE officials to show them he could execute it correctly.
The following SmackDown after Kidman injured Chavo, Kidman went to the top rope to deliver the move again but got hesitant and walked to the back, full of guilt from hurting Chavo which resulted in his partner Paul London to fend for himself against Kenzo Suzuki and René Duprée which resulted in Kidman/London losing their Tag Team Championship and splitting up. Kidman then feuded with Paul London, the highlight being an incredible match at No Mercy, with Kidman delivering a devastating (in all the right ways this time) Shooting Star Press on London laid on a stretcher after the match.
