10 WWE & AEW Gimmicks That Belong In A Different Era
1. Cody Rhodes
What actually is Cody Rhodes' gimmick?
It seems he doesn't seem to know himself, and considering the obvious indulgence he is allowed from Tony Khan, it's whatever he fancies at the time. He goes from playing a ring general, to trying to be a badass and turning up in a jeep, to then dying his hair black and getting tough. Oh, and he wants to fly the flag and give "ra-ra" America speeches.
It's a really strange time to watch Cody, as the AEW crowd who saw him as a hero, as the man who changed wrestling, are starting to loathe the guy. He isn't getting booed because of great heel work. When he needlessly pinned Malakai Black this past week, the boos that greeted it was clear 'go away' heat.
This wholesome, crowd loving, salt of the earth character that he tries to portray (that doesn't work considering there is a reality show which shows how rich he is) has run its course in AEW. But that would have worked a treat during the Golden Era. At a time where his dad was one of the most beloved babyfaces in the industry, Cody's cheesy, good guy routine where he vanquishes evil in the end, would have gone down a treat.
It worked well for Hulk Hogan. And he loved fighting for America just as much.
