There may never be another story like that surrounding the match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels at the 1997 Survivor Series. Set to depart for WCW shortly after the pay-per-view, Hart went into the show as the reigning WWF Heavyweight Champion. That didn't sit well with Vince McMahon, who was eager to remove the belt from Bret.

Behind Hart's back, McMahon, Michaels and others came up with a plan to take the title from him. As Michaels had Bret locked in his own Sharpshooter hold, referee Earl Hebner (also in on the conspiracy) called for the bell. Hart was left crestfallen, feeling cheated and betrayed.

This wasn't common knowledge for most fans going into the match, they were simply looking forward to seeing Hart and Michaels face off for the first time on pay-per-view since WrestleMania XII.

Post-match, Hart spat at Vince McMahon and then punched him backstage for his actions. He was leaving the WWF under terrible circumstances, and his career was arguably never the same again.
