Only joining the company shortly after WrestleMania XIX, Bill Goldberg was programmed against The Rock for his first WWE feud. Following a match at Backlash, Goldberg then moved on to face another top star in the company. There was just one problem, though: he hadn't been so willing to work with Chris Jericho when the pair worked together in WCW.

Looking for a way to launch himself up the card, Jericho had repeatedly pitched a rivalry with Goldberg to WCW management. It was the wrestler himself who in turn knocked the suggestion back, uninterested in working with Jericho in a lengthy feud.

That didn't sit well with Y2J, who had in the years since left WCW in 1999 and went on to become a huge star in WWE. At Bad Blood 2003, that backstory was used as a focal point for a programme between the two men. WWE even allowed Jericho to acknowledge his prior problems with Goldberg on-screen.

It is also common knowledge that the pair had a backstage scuffle around this time, with Jericho surprisingly coming out on top thanks a well-timed chokehold.
