10 WWE Legends Who Tapped Out To Kurt Angle
3. Shawn Michaels - WrestleMania 21
Shawn Michaels is no stranger to stealing the show, especially at WrestleMania, and he and Kurt put on a masterclass in 2005. Given you’ve got two all time greats in the same ring, it’s no surprise the match was great, but few could have seen two somewhat disparate (on paper) stars carrying off this great of a performance.
It’s a no frills affair in its build up - in lieu of gimmicks or dragged out storylines, you’ve just got two amazing wrestlers who each think they’re better than the other. Michaels especially has something to prove here. Reaching the midpoint of his second in-ring run, he sets out to demonstrate that he can keep up with the (slightly) younger man, and fights Kurt at his own game, mixing mat work with his usual high flying offence. The finish is golden: Angle cinches the ankle lock; Michaels resists for longer than anyone could think possible (reaffirming his legacy as the business’ greatest seller), but finally taps.
The match goes for 27 minutes - easily the longest on the card - but doesn’t flag for a moment. Michaels had some incredible bouts at WrestleMania before and after, but this should be in contention for his finest hour at the show of shows.
