Drawing a buyrate that would last for ten years as a WrestleMania record, Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan's mammoth 1989 WWE Title contest was understandably rife for rematches on WWE's growing pay-per-view schedule.

With Savage winning the title a year earlier, his run as champion was mixed in with a crowd-pleasing tag team spell alongside 'The Hulkster' which gradually drew out his sociopathic jealously over his partner's platonic relationship with Miss Elizabeth.

Snapping on his now-former partner in a vicious backstage beatdown just weeks before the show, the heat was at the most intense level at exactly the right time, and television audiences voted with their wallets on the night.

Subsequently, WWE voted to stretch their conflicts out through the remainder of the year, with Savage acquiring the assistance of Hogan's silver-screen nemesis Zeus to force a tag team main event for August's Summerslam event with Hulk's buddy Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake.

The pairs would clash again at a 'No Holds Barred: The Match, The Movie' cage match/film screening double header in December to definitively payoff Zeus' involvement in the angle, allowing the remaining three to spin off into their respective angles for WrestleMania 6 in early 1990.
