10 WWE Moments That Prove Ruthless Aggression Era Was Best
6. The HBK/HHH Feud Takes Off
In terms of sheer chemistry, it would be hard to find another couple of guys who were on the same page like Triple H and Shawn Michaels. Whether they were working side-by-side or at each other's throats, their relationship behind the scenes helped to make their performances together on screen really shine. And as much as people wanted to see Michaels and Triple H "get the band back together" in 2002 and reunite the original iteration of D-Generation X, it just wasn't the right time. We'd already suffered through a bland attempt at repurposing the nWo, and the idea of another anti-authority nostalgia act was a little hard to swallow. That's why the idea of just "teasing" a DX reunion was ideal, and quickly pulling the rug out from under it set up a fantastic run between the two former heads of the stable. Michaels, who'd recently returned to the WWE in a major in-ring capacity for the first time since 1998 due to a back injury, came back reformed, sporting a new look and a more mature demeanor. And Hunter, who was enjoying a run as the company's de facto top dog, had every kayfabe reason for not wanting to let his old friend steal the spotlight away from him. So after coming to the ring dressed in DX attire--with Rage Against the Machine pumping through the speakers--they looked ready to crotch chop their way back into the hearts of wrestling fans everywhere. But Triple H stopped the celebration short by giving HBK the ol' low blow and a Pedigree for his troubles. It was a defining statement from Hunter that he was no longer the sidekick, he was...dun, dun, DUH...The Game.
