Spike Dudley was another Superstar to enter the WWE having built himself a name elsewhere. Spike had of course spent half a decade wrestling for ECW, where his gimmick was basically that of a walking, talking drug-reference.

Donning his trademark psychedelic attire, the “runt” of the litter went by the name Little Spike Dudley—or LSD, for short—and his finisher was known as the Acid Drop. And while that kind of inside joke may have sat well in Philly, it wasn’t necessarily a message that the WWE wanted to convey.

When he debuted on Monday Night Raw, Spike had dropped the “Little” prefix and his running turnbuckle backflip cutter soon became known as the Dudley Dog.

Though this was well before the PG era, it suggests that Vince had always had one eye on reigning in the crudity of his product. Either that or he was just trying to impose his mark on matters. Yeah you’re right, it was probably the latter of the two…
