From @zidanix: Should NXT replace Smackdown? Smackdown rarely advances stories and feuds.
It's not going to happen. Smackdown has been a worldwide WWE show for 16 years and it's not going away any time soon. There are definitely stories that get advanced on the show although it's not a must see show like it was during the brand extension. Some fans never watch it because they know that if anything really big happens they're just going to show the highlights on Raw. It's not like they do anything on Smackdown to make it must-see. NXT is a really good show that a lot of people like including me, but it's better off being its own entity. Fans that love it know where to watch it and they also know it's different form the main roster. There's no need to change things up. What WWE needs to do is make Smackdown more of a priority because right now it's clearly the "B" show with a smaller audience than the "A" show aka Raw.
