Multiple pay-per-view matches in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002 brought Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker together more times than was ever necessary despite the talent and popularity with audiences both shared.

'The Deadman' and 'The Rattlesnake' had their best matches in '97, when a re-energised Undertaker could take the heelish Austin to task in their headline battles at In Your House's Final Four and A Cold Day In Hell.

By SummerSlam '98, Stone Cold vs. The Undertaker was unquestionably the biggest match the company could promote to headline the Madison Square Garden showpiece, but their dramatic contest that night would never be topped despite numerous retreads.

By 1999, both men were physically crumbling, leading to woeful kick-punch brawls at Over The Edge and Fully Loaded, but this lethargy wouldn't compare to heinous encounters following Austin's heel turn in 2001.

Overweight and uninterested, the 'American Bad Ass' was a weak first challenger for Austin's newly-won title in tag action at Backlash and singles competition at the following month's Judgment Day. The same applied yet again in 2002 when the duo clashed one final time before Austin's acrimonious exit.
