The Rock could be called disloyal to the WWE for pretty much retiring from wrestling at the height of his popularity in 2002, but consider this, he left WWE to shoot films in partnership with Vince McMahon. Rock's Hollywood career was fully supported by Vince and in many ways it was a sign of Rock's loyalty to McMahon that he endeavoured on the new direction. Indeed, Vince McMahon was executive producer to some of Rocky's earliest cinematic efforts such as 'The Rundown'. While Rock has diversified his career away from McMahon, he has done so with the Chairman's blessing. He remains a hugely valued part of the WWE family and any external success is still seen as a positive for the wrestling brand. In this respect he is still on the WWE payroll in terms of several licensing and brand features. More prominently he has came back on a specific talent deal in the last few years which featured him as the headliner of two WrestleMania events. He didn't need the money, he didn't need the fame - Rock really did do that deal based partly on his sense of loyalty to Vince McMahon.
