It seems like an absolute age ago at this point, but John Cena's first singles opportunity at a World Championship on pay-per-view in WWE came very early on in his career. It came in just his fourth PPV match at that point, and the variety in the three that came before it makes for interesting reading.

His first match couldn't have come against a better opponent for someone so inexperienced, as Chris Jericho provided the opposition at Vengeance 2002. Things had changed drastically the next time Cena laced up his boots on a big show, however, as he found himself teaming with Dawn Marie against Billy Kidman and Torrie Wilson at Rebellion.

Cena then took part in the 2003 Royal Rumble, lasting a decent 20 minutes before being hurled over the top by The Undertaker. Cena would then get his singles title opportunity at Backlash that year, losing to the man who won that Rumble by eliminating 'Taker last.

That man was Brock Lesnar.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
