10 WWE Stars You Forgot Fought For WCW During The Monday Night War
4. David Sammartino
As the son of the most storied WWE Champion of all time with a family name synonymous with the company dating back to the early 60's, David Sammartino was destined for disappointment.
The younger Sammartino joined the WWE in 1984 with his legendary father as his manager. Recruited by McMahon in order to bring the ever popular Bruno back into the company, David was quickly relegated to a role as a preliminary wrestler for the company.
Lacking the charisma of his father, David's crowning WWE achievement came at the first WrestleMania where he wrestled Brutus Beefcake to a double disqualification. Quitting the company in late 1985, Sammartino would spend the rest of the decade between the AWA, UWF, All Japan and briefly WWE again in 1988 before retiring in 1990.
Returning to the ring in 1995, Sammartino made what would be one of the most confounding appearances of the Monday Night Wars. Emerging from the entrance way on WCW Nitro in December 1996, Sammartino cut an aged figure as he challenged and lost to WCW Cruiserweight Champion Dean Malenko. The match - which only lasted four minutes - was the first time David had been seen on national television in 10 years and the last time he was seen on one since.
