10 WWE SummerSlam Hidden Gems You Need To Check Out

6. Edge vs. Lance Storm (2001)

The opening match on any Pay-Per-View is important. 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper once told The Rockers that they had an important job to do in the curtain jerker of the Royal Rumble 1991, because they were warming up the live audience and setting the tone for the show. That same mindset was prevalent at SummerSlam 2001, as both Lance Storm and Edge produced a fine match. Vying for the Intercontinental Title, Edge gave fans inside the Compaq Center in San Jose, California a reason to pop at the beginning of the event. His fellow Canadian, Storm would never get much higher than this during his WWE tenure, but at least he can look back on this match. The whole 'Invasion' story was already failing badly, so fans were only too pleased to focus on actual wrestling. Just over 10 minutes was all both guys were handed, but that was more than enough for them to suck people in. Lance Storm had only held the Intercontinental belt for around a month, but fans were delighted to see Edge DDT him and get the victory. Better yet, the ongoing split angle between Edge and Christian was furthered during the bout, paving the way for matches between the pair.
