10 WWE SummerSlam Records You Didn’t Know About
7. The Second-Biggest PPV
Behind WrestleMania, SummerSlam is often touted as being the
second-biggest PPV on the WWE calendar. Rather than simply being a mere marketing slogan, we actually have empirical evidence to back up this kind of
billing.
Of the so-called 'Big Four' PPVs, SummerSlam’s average attendance over the years is second only to WrestleMania, with approximately 19,913 fans coming out to see the show each year. That figure is slightly lower for the Royal Rumble at 17,369, while Survivor Series is languishing somewhat on 14,815.
Now, you could argue that SummerSlam’s average figure is boosted by that bumper Wembley Stadium attendance from 1992, but the Royal Rumble also had a stadium sell-out of its own back in 1997. So it’s more a case of SummerSlam being better-attended consistently over a number of years, particularly in its early days when crowds of 20,000 were commonplace.
In fact, the nine highest SummerSlam attendances each arrived before the turn of the millennium, suggesting that interest in the show may actually be dwindling. Although, this has a lot to do with the actual arenas being booked, so it’s not necessarily a fair comparison year-to-year.
But it is an interesting note that even during the mid-90s when business was supposedly poor, SummerSlam still managed to maintain some pretty solid attendances.
