The most successful star to ever come out of the business, so much so that he transcended it to become the highest paid actor in Hollywood, there is no way of looking at The Rock and not seeing a complete and utter success.

From his plethora of catch phrases, iconic moments and connection with the fans, the ‘People’s Champ’ will go down in history as one of the greatest to ever step in the ring.

But boy did it get off to a rocky start! Playing heavily on his family's esteemed heritage in the business, the ‘Brahma Bull’ burst onto the scene in 1996 as Rocky Maivia, a clean cut good guy with a beaming smile and plenty of tassels. Still a bit green in the ring, he showed little of the charisma that would rocket him to superstardom, yet the WWE were persistent in giving him a prominent spot on the card.

Within six months of his debut, he had been strapped up with the then-prestigious WWE Intercontinental Championship, beating Hunter Hearst Helmsley. The crowd weren’t buying it, and soon, the fans that would go on to become ‘the millions’ flat out bullied him.

‘DIE, ROCKY, DIE!’

They chanted that at him up until he lost the belt a year after winning it, and then an injury curtailed his push. He returned as part of the Nation of Domination, turned on the same fans who had turned on him, and began on his journey to wrestling immortality.

It just goes to show that even the greatest need time to get things right.
