10 WWE Superstars Who Have Been Released The Most

8. Matt Hardy (3)

The Broken One Matt Hardy was finally able to delete his latest WWE contract at the end of March, and released from the company, though his previous departures were considerably less mutually beneficial.

In 2005, the internet's sordid voyeurism was intrigued when it emerged that Edge had been carrying on a backstage affair with colleague and Hardy's real-life girlfriend Lita. Understandably incensed, Hardy launched into a social media meltdown in the direction of the philanderer and the adulteress. Quite aside from admonishing Edge for his unprofessional conduct, it was Matt who was punished, cruelly let go for bringing the brand into disrepute.

After a brief spell on the indies, WWE finally decided that the love triangle was too pointy not to capitalise on. Hardy was brought back just months after his dismissal, for a summer long feud with his cuckolder - which, naturally, the heel won. Things worked out a little better for some time thereafter, but the wheels once more came off in 2010, when Hardy was sent home from a European tour, with insiders uttering the dreaded phrase 'no condition to perform'.

As with his first release, a series of increasingly peculiar and concerning social media posts precluded WWE's lack of empathy; rather than help their troubled employee, they fired him that October.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
