10 WWE Superstars Who Need A Character Change
7. Apollo Crews
After signing for WWE, Apollo Crews would only spend one year in NXT. One year. That’s a shorter tenure than Finn Bálor - an already established star in Japan - spent as a part of WWE’s developmental brand. During his time in NXT, Crews was booked strongly and quickly became the number one contender for Bálor’s NXT Championship. Baron Corbin would ultimately cost him the match, in turn setting up Apollo’s only real feud in NXT before being fast-tracked to the main roster.
As a result of his short time in NXT, he was never really able to show any real character and this would not change on the main roster. He quickly became involved in a feud with the Social Outcasts, before later being targeted by Sheamus. This, you would think, would be a perfect time for Apollo to show something different. Right? Wrong. Despite brutal backstage attacks from Sheamus, Crews’ temperament rarely changed. He continued to be a jolly, smiley man who was just happy to be there.
Unsurprisingly, this didn’t help him get over with the fans and, despite an initial push towards the Intercontinental Title following the draft, Apollo has been relatively irrelevant for a while, now.
Unfortunately for him, Apollo Crews is a perfect example of the fact that you can have all the athleticism in the world but if you have no character, you won’t get very far.
