Extreme Rules 2012 is widely regarded as one of the best WWE pay-per-views of the current decade. It was on that night that Brock Lesnar made his in-ring return to the company in a brutal match against John Cena, whilst elsewhere Daniel Bryan & Sheamus and CM Punk & Chris Jericho put on high-class affairs that blew their WrestleMania matches out of the water.

You know what match never, ever gets talked about from that night? Santino Marella vs. The Miz for the United States Championship, that's what. Okay, that is most likely because it was on the pre-show, but still.

The fall of The Miz truly was remarkable. One year prior he was in the Extreme Rules main event, losing his WWE Championship to John Cena in a great triple threat cage match that also included John Morrison. Twelve months later he was reduced to working the pre-show with a comedy wrestler.

From WrestleMania main event to this in the blink of an eye.

He was fast becoming a joke, and as such was treated like one here. Santino won with the Cobra in less than five-minutes, as the humiliation of The Miz reached its apex.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
