10 WWE Worst WrestleMania Gimmick Matches

6. Edge vs Randy Orton (WrestleMania 36)

Edge’s return at the 2020 Royal Rumble was the feel good moment of a year light on them. The Hall Of Famer was back - the possibilities were endless. The roster boasted abundant dream matches, and so his immediate rivalry with Randy Orton felt a tad deflating - we’ve seen this plenty. Still, a last man standing match at WrestleMania sounds like a good time, right?

More like a long time. It would be unfair to call this match downright bad, but it wore out its welcome long before it creaked to the finish. The two stalked each other around the empty performance centre for almost forty minutes, stopping to exchange punches or weapons shots then back to shuffling around.

More than any other match in the empty arena era, this one felt eerie, with long action-free stretches highlighting how badly the crowds were missed. The idea was for a grand sense of scale; instead it was just a grind.

The finish went for high emotion as Edge bashed Orton’s head atop a production truck for the win, but instead of gasps, all the fans gave was a collective sigh of relief it was over. Two years later, we’re getting the Edge/A.J Styles showdown we’ve been clamouring for, and assuming it’s less than 40 minutes long, it should be a cracker.
