10 WWE Wrestlers Who The Fans Truly Hated
3. Lita
When wrestling bled into real life in 2005, things got predictably ugly. Matt Hardy’s long time relationship with Amy Dumas broke down after her dalliance with Adam Copeland (Edge) came to light, and in a typically tasteless fashion, WWE quickly capitalised on the heat. An angle was booked utilising the real story, which led most notably to Edge becoming one of the business’ top heels.
Edge’s role in the whole mess was eventually forgotten, but Lita’s never was during her time as an active competitor. WWE fans, often not the most enlightened of folk, would vocalise their discontent in the most aggressive of terms, and this was fueled by the likes of Jerry Lawler, whose commentary had leaned hard on misogyny for the majority of his career.
Lita played the role brilliantly and was thrust into the main event as Edge’s valet, but the double standards exhibited by some of the fans left a sour taste indeed. The matter was unedifying in general, but WWE’s exploitation of this raw and real situation bordered on the reckless.
