100 Greatest WWE Matches Of All Time (Ranked)
81. Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins (Hell In A Cell 2022)
People generally remember one thing about Hell In A Cell 2022's startling main event between Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. You know what that is, right? The disgusting colour of Cody's torn pectoral muscle that became the bout's sole story. It was unsightly, but it was also astonishing that Rhodes was able to work a match of any description at all given the pain he must've been in.
Doctors backstage can’t have been too keen to clear Cody for the show, but he clenched his teeth and went out there to wrestle Seth in a 25 minute long cage bout anyway. The torn pec aspect played into what Rollins was all about in the summer of 2022. He'd hated that Cody came back from AEW, and he wanted to torture the 'Grandson Of A Plumber' both mentally and physically.
So, Seth came out wearing polka dots as a not so subtle dig towards Dusty's run in the WWF. Then, he laughed his head off when Rhodes revealed purple bruising underneath his entrance attire. All of that only rallied people behind Cody further, and those people got their reward by watching a snug (and likely excruciating) performance from their hero.
This HIAC war cemented Rhodes as WWE's top babyface. It's be another year and a half before he was on top as WWE Champion, but Cody won a lot of support in June 2022. Nobody was surprised when he needed to take some time off after the PLE to heal up though. That pec had to be screaming.
