68. Gunther vs. Sheamus (Clash At The Castle 2022)

In retrospect, Wales got one hell of a card for Clash At The Castle 2022. Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre headlined, but other bouts like Seth Rollins vs. Matt Riddle, Edge and Rey Mysterio vs. Finn Bálor and Damian Priest, and Damage CTRL vs. Bianca Belair, Asuka and Alexa Bliss all delivered. Then, there was a pulsating, hard-hitting battle pitting supreme Intercontinental Champ and chop machine Gunther vs. Sheamus.

Both lads had to wake up the next morning and struggle to get out of their hotel room beds, because they laid it in when contesting what's traditionally the "workhorse title". NWA-era Jim Ross would've been salivating at the prospect of calling this one had he been able. It was akin to something that would've pinned down a classic Clash Of The Champions special on TBS back in the mid-to-late-1980s.

Gunther and Sheamus should take that as a compliment. They honoured pro wrestling's traditions by putting on a real sweaty clinic complete with eye-watering strikes and more than a few tasty holds. On the whole, this was more of a slugfest than a technical contest though, and Cardiff's masses were absolutely there for every single bit of it.

Simply put, this will go down in history as one of the greatest IC matches ever. It was so good that both Reigns and McIntyre must've been shaking their heads at the thought of following it later on the same night. Or, maybe that isn't how elite level wrestlers think. Who knows?

One hell of a match for the midcard.
