100 Greatest WWE Matches Of All Time (Ranked)

16. 1992 Royal Rumble Match

Royal Rumbles are usually dramatic, action-packed and brimming with top moments, but they're rarely considered great matches. That's true for almost every single one other than the 1992 version. It's generally viewed as the greatest Rumble of all time, and it's a prime example of just how outstanding the match type can be if booked consistently and with real care.

Agents in '92 crafted one of the most well thought out 30-man affairs imaginable. They struck the perfect balance between oodles of star power and making everybody involved matter. Realistically, names like The Undertaker, Randy Savage, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice could've won it without any protest from the core WWF audience. Supporting cast members like The British Bulldog, Roddy Piper, Ted DiBiase, Shawn Michaels, Jake Roberts, Sgt. Slaughter and more bolstered the field too.

Contrast and compare this to the relatively weak lineup for the following year's 1993 Rumble and it's no contest.

Bobby Heenan might as well have been a 31st entrant, because he put in a blinding shift on commentary when selling the importance of Flair's win. Seeing the 'Nature Boy' go from the #3 slot all the way to the end was stunning, and so were the quirky sub plots federation chiefs inserted for main event talent like Hogan and Savage.

Ric's win bagged him his first WWF Title too, so add that to the list of reasons why the '92 Rumble was so significant. Coming in so high up in the rankings here is definitely fair to Flair.
