7. The Women's Championship Revival

For nine years, the WWE Divas Championship reminded fans of everything wrong with women's wrestling in Vince McMahon's company. The belt itself was gaudy and in the shape of a butterfly. It looked like an accessory that would come with Pro Wrestling Barbie more than a prestigious championship for women to strive to achieve.

At WrestleMania 32, the company waved goodbye to that hardware and all of the negative connotations it created. In its place, it reintroduced the Women's Championship, a sleekly designed belt modelled after the men's world championship. It was a step in the right direction in terms of gaining greater acceptance of the female performers as legitimate superstars rather than the sideshow act they had been for so long.

The Showcase of the Immortals was home to an extraordinary bout between Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch that not only lived up to the lofty expectations placed on it by fans, it also elevated the importance of the newly reintroduced title.

Increased television time, higher-profile title defenses and an heightened enthusiasm for the sport has helped women's wrestling reach new heights thus far in 2016.
