Shane McMahon's return to WWE took the wrestling world by surprise, catching even the most knowledgeable of insiders off-guard.

After years of tension between him, his father, sister and brother-in-law, there were very serious doubts that fans would ever see the prodigal son back in the company his family built from the bottom up. His successful business ventures outside of the United States left him a rich man.

He had no real reason to come back other than to perform one time for his kids, inject the product with excitement and prove that the unexpected is still possible in an industry dictated by the Internet.

He did all of that and freshened up a product dominated by the tired heel authority figure story.

There was no measurable growth in viewers and the mainstream attention was minimal. His Hell in a Cell match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 generated business and resulted in an unforgettable bump by Shane-O-Mac, but was not particularly historically significant.

For longtime fans of WWE and the McMahon family saga, it was a thank you of sorts. It was repayment for years of support and the spark that the build to the biggest show of the year desperately needed. His continued interactions with sister Stephanie have been amusing and should continue to be so as WWE prepares for the brand extension.
