8. Submission: Opponent Passes Out
The original concept behind the submission match is essentially a traditional match with the luxury of being able to pin your opponent removed. Only achieving victory by getting your opponent to give up is a test of each wrestler's ability to inflict and tolerate pain. The submission match at Wrestlemania 13 between Bret Hart & Stone Cold Steve Austin is one of the most iconic in WWE's history. Not only is the visual of Austin's blood covered face one of the most potent images of wrestling violence there's ever been, but the match is cited as the moment WWE fully embraced the Attitude Era. As for the match itself, it was a test of Bret's technical prowess versus Austin's unwillingness to concede, and ultimately submit. Fittingly, Bret's Sharpshooter trapped Austin, but he refused to submit; instead enduring the hold for so long that he passed out from the blood-soaked pain, and Bret was awarded the win. Bret may have found a weird way to win, but it was Austin who came out looking the hero.
