Though Dusty Rhodes certainly made a few enemies throughout his career, he’s regularly held-up as a saintly figure by those who worked with him (particularly in his later years). ‘The American Dream’ became WWE developmental’s warm-hearted father figure as NXT’s Creative Director, but he was a wildly popular performer before that. Rhodes perfected the blue collar babyface character type in the 1980s, becoming one of the era’s biggest stars thanks to his charisma, flamboyance, and world-class promo skills.

This legacy is alive and well in 2017, with Goldust, his eldest son, still active in WWE. Born Dustin Runnels, his groundbreaking Goldust persona flourished in the Attitude Era, and when he eventually retires, he’ll go down as one of the most under-rated in-ring performers of his generation. A former Intercontinental, Tag Team, and Hardcore Champion, his place in history is assured.

Cody, meanwhile, has become one of independent wrestling’s hottest commodities. His WWE run didn’t work out, but he has provided the perfect blueprint for how to succeed outside the company, and if he ever returns, he’ll do so as a far bigger star than when he left.
