12 Hilarious WWE Backstage Skits You Probably Don't Remember
9. Jimmen Marvinluder
It’s entirely possible that this current version of Chris Jericho - a grumpy, vain old curmudgeon infuriated by change and the passage of time - is the greatest character he’s ever played.
From the irascible old-man-yelling, to the gloriously lame ‘stupid idiot!’ catchphrase to the insistence on cataloguing the cost of every crappy item of Aerosmith-lite clothing he wears to the ring, 2016 Jericho is the perfect all-purpose heel to antagonise any babyface on the roster.
His recent grudging alliance with the similarly surly Kevin Owens is a match made in heaven. Last week’s backstage promo introducing that alliance was a beautiful thing to behold, as Jericho sneered at Enzo and Cass, informing Tom Phillips (once again, mysteriously inches shorter than the five foot ten Y2J) that he too had back-up...the legendary Jimmen Marvinluder, badass shotputter extraordinaire.
Almost all of the commentary surrounding this skit focuses purely on the Jericho/Owens tag team relationship that it seems to signify. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it performance completely overshadowed by Owens’ arrival at the end, so you’d be forgiven for having skipped over it entirely.
Jericho’s babyface persona might be twenty years out of date and staler than a fossilised bagel but his heel instincts are still unmatched in the business, and he’s easily capable of getting a laugh or three while he’s at it without losing any heat. Best in the world at what he does, indeed.
