9. The Lex Express

In 1993, Vince McMahon was looking for a new all-American babyface to carry WWE for the next several years, and he finally decided on Lex Luger. It wasn't the worst idea - Luger was successful in WCW as a face and as a heel - but this time, the bland former NWA World Heavyweight Champion didn't have Ric Flair around to make him look good. Luger turned babyface in an explosive segment where he bodyslammed Yokozuna on the deck of the U.S.S. Intrepid, standing up for the U.S.A. and winning a SummerSlam title shot in the process. After that, it was decided that Luger should connect with the WWE fans - personally. He hopped aboard a red, white, and blue tour bus - The "Lex Express" - and drove around the country shaking hands and kissing babies. Segments of his goodwill journey were shown on Raw, but they didn't endear him to fans who found the whole thing corny. By the time SummerSlam rolled around, Luger hadn't gathered the following necessary to become WWE Champion. He beat Yokozuna by disqualification, celebrated his empty victory, and lost what little credibility he had gathered.
