12 Times WWE Brutally CANCELLED World Championship Reigns
9. Tito Santana
Tito Santana was one of the few in-ring highlights of the 1980s Golden Era, but the concept of him winning the WWF Championship is a bit like that outdated meme of Oprah Winfrey gifting a car to everybody in the audience. It's a nice idea, but one that makes little business sense.
The longstanding rumour is that plans to crown the better half of Strike Force with the title were put in motion because the WWF was planning a major expansion into South America, with Vince McMahon firmly believing that Santana was the right face for the job. Now, Tito has put the rumours to rest: a recent podcast appearance saw the WWE Hall of Famer confirm that McMahon wanted to belt him. A specific time frame wasn't mentioned, but a glance through the annals of WWE history should help you pinpoint the year to 1992.
That was the year in which the Canadian-born Bret Hart first sat atop the WWF mountain, with a further four reigns following for 'The Hitman'. As for the first WWE Champion of Hispanic background? That would be Eddie Guerrero in 2004.
Poor Tito Santana never got a sniff of the spotlight, but he did receive the 'El Matador' gimmick, so that's...something.
