12 Ups And 16 Downs For WWE In 2021

6. All Things Charlotte

There’s no denying that Charlotte Flair is one of the most talented wrestlers in WWE, period. But that doesn’t make her one of the most engaging or must-see on the roster. And it certainly doesn’t mean WWE can do no wrong with her.

Flair’s 2021 was one mishandling after another. She started the year in an odd couple tag team as tag champs with Asuka, which they lost because Lacey Evans was in an implied relationship with Ric Flair (yes, seriously). It was an embarrassing angle with Ric interfering in his daughter’s matches as he was “mentoring” Lacey. Thankfully, Evans got pregnant in real life and that killed that storyline.

Charlotte missed out on WrestleMania, but she’d win the Raw Women’s Championship after turning heel and ending Rhea Ripley’s first run. Flair lost the title to Nikki ASH and then won it back a month later, all while fans showered her with… indifference.

Charlotte was drafted to SmackDown while still holding the Raw women’s title, which was fortunate because Becky Lynch did the same in the other direction. This led to the now-infamous title exchange segment where things broke down between the women, which made Flair look like a petulant child.

Through it all, Charlotte definitely had a down year where her stock fell and her reputation suffered. She’s a candidate for taking an extended break so we can actually miss her and be happy to see her.
