In recent years, WWE’s King of the Ring has been a dud of a tournament, with the winners not really doing much positive of note, or just being jobbed out after winning the crown.

But this year, WWE resurrected the KOTR and established the Queen’s Crown tournament for the women. The result was King Woods achieving a lifelong dream and Queen Zelina rising to the top after being released earlier.

Woods is probably the perfect guy to be crowned WWE king. He’s well-established as go-to guy, a multi-time tag champ and reliable performer. The crown means something to him, and he’s great at elevating it without seeming too corny. Zelina’s makeover as queen has been fun, with her false accent coming and going. More importantly, she’s mostly won as queen, even capturing the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship with Carmella.

It’s good to see WWE finally do something positive with the king and queen monikers, but the proof will be if it actually continues or if it’s just a short-term boost.
