In the summer of 2011, WWE chanced upon the hottest program in its mitts for years, as CM Punk walked out on the company after defeating John Cena for the WWE Championship in an all-time classic at the Money in the Bank PPV. Of course, Punk returned but a week later because pro wrestling, but for the first time in years RAW was truly must-see TV.

Punk would defeat Cena once more at SummerSlam, only to have his title immediately ripped away from him by Alberto Del Rio, who cashed in his MiTB briefcase after Punk was attacked by Kevin Nash of all people. This in itself was pretty stupid, but transitioning Punk into a feud with Triple H made sense as it was obviously the McMahon-Helmsley Empire that was the real focus of his anger.

Somehow, WWE managed to take a white-hot story involved CM Punk and make it all about Triple H and Kevin Nash, a part-time performer and an ageing superstar whose best years were over a decade behind him at that point.

The whole thing sank to a new low when Punk's belief that Hunter texted Nash to interfere in the Straight Edge Superstar's business was proved wrong, as it was revealed that Kevin Nash texted himself to spark the interference. I can't really sum up the stupidity of what this story became better than that development.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
