5. The Dastardly Michael Cole

After carving out a comfortable career as a vanilla babyface announcer, Michael Cole turned heel out of nowhere in 2010. The catalyst for the turn seemed to be Daniel Bryan's arrival on NXT, and the former war-reporter slandered Bryan at every turn.

To call it annoying would be an understatement, as Cole's already grating delivery took on a new irritating tone.

Heading into WrestleMania XXVII Cole was embroiled in a blood feud with fellow commentator Jerry 'The King' Lawler, because feuds between announcers have always been money for professional wrestling organisations.

Cole actually defeated Lawler at 'Mania (admittedly by reverse decision), but there was more to come.

Heel Cole continued, drawing Jim Ross into the feud for more PPV matches that a grand total of zero people were interested in seeing. There's a fine line between heel heat and what is known as X-Pac heat, and Cole found himself deep in Parts Unknown of the latter.

The charade came to an end abruptly when Lawler suffered an on-air heart attack later in 2012. The entire period is best left forgotten.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
