13 Reasons To Love Eddie Guerrero Vs. Rey Mysterio In WWE
5. SmackDown Main Event - June 23rd, 2005
Proving that WWE were going all the way with Eddie and Rey as the top feud on SmackDown, the company gave them a full twenty eight minutes to play with for their SmackDown main event, which aired on June 23rd. This was, in part, because WWE were keen to draw in the hispanic audience and felt that Eddie versus Rey would do just that. Whether or not it produced a good rating, I don't know. What I do know is that the two produced another stellar, PPV-quality match, one that was different from their previous matches. With the two men having clashed many times on TV and PPV already (as well as house shows), you get the sense watching this that these are two pros who are totally comfortable working with each other and mixing it up when necessary. This time around it was Eddie who had the injured ribs, the result of an attack by Rey on the previous week's broadcast. This played into the match with Rey targeting Guerrero's midsection. Once Eddie got his bearings he was able to work over Rey with kicks, chokes, a stunningly crisp powerbomb and tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Latino Heat put on a clinic in this one. But it wasn't enough to put Rey down: yet again Mysterio withstood Eddie's onslaught to fight back and win against the odds, dropping him with a 619 followed by a springboard legdrop. After the match Eddie allowed a smile, one that said 'you may have got me again but I'm not finished yet'.
