13 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Daffney

4. COVID Isolation Was Hugely Detrimental

Not many reading this will enjoy reminders of how brutal and uncertain a time the COVID pandemic was. Countless people were isolated from loved ones and loneliness was a real issue. Shannon went through that the same as everyone else, but her experiences through COVID came at the end of a lengthy, toxic road full of substance abuse, arrests, car accidents and online bullying.

Spruill had started self medicating and mixing drinks once her wrestling dream died. That unfortunately led to a DUI incident, which is never cool, and she was court ordered to go to rehab. Rather than do that, she wanted to commit suicide the night before attending, but Lexie Fyfe talked her out of it. Talking her best friend "off a ledge" became all too familiar to Fyfe.

Online comments about Shannon's weight gain mounted up and had a negative impact on things too. Then, COVID came at the worst time possible and she felt totally isolated. Family and friends cared, but Spruill couldn’t see it. Yeah, it’s heartbreaking to think of what these people who loved her were going through too. They had to be terrified that something bad was about to happen, and it did.

There are a few depressing clips of Shannon trying to smile through the pain on VICE. She laughed at some cruel comments regarding her appearance, but it's clear with the benefit of hindsight that she was masking and trying to brave face things for her fans. That was never going to end well.

Some people really, really suck. Shame on those people for piling on.
