13 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Daffney

3. The Instagram Live Segment Is A Rough Watch

The whole documentary is tough to sit through, being totally upfront about it, but this bit in particular is so unbelievably bleak that words can't do it justice.

Friends and family recalled Shannon going live on Instagram on 1 September 2021. She’d borrowed a gun from someplace, read a suicide note during the live stream, said she wanted her brain to be donated for CTE studies, then the screen went black. Friends and peers from the wrestling business were ringing off the hook and leaving voicemails asking her to call them, but she wouldn’t answer or call back.

Finally, family got to her apartment, and once they gained access she was lying dead. That’s so awful it’s difficult to find the words to explain how they must've been feeling at that moment. Spruill had shot herself mid-live stream, and nobody could quite believe it. It's borderline torture to watch and listen to these loved ones scrambling for justification and wondering if they could've done anything to help.

Caleb Konley, Lexie Fyfe, Taylor Wilde, Crowbar, Mick Foley, her father Quentin, her brother Darren and a few others all shed tears on 'Dark Side' when remembering this depressing evening and how it played out from rough beginning to tragic end.

Please note: The above screenshot is obviously not from the aforementioned Instagram live stream. That wouldn't have been included on VICE's show anyway out of respect and probably due to legal reasons. Instead, that screen grab is from one of Shannon's earlier interviews the same year she passed on.
