13 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: Daffney

9. Daffney Wasn’t Comfortable With A Fateful TNA Spot

Shannon's Daffney gimmick ran in on a bloody ‘Monsters Ball’ bout between Mick Foley and Abyss at TNA’s Bound For Glory 2009 pay-per-view. Previously, she'd confided in Lexie Fyfe that TNA wanted her to go through a barbed wire table at ringside but that she didn’t feel completely comfortable doing it. Foley recalls things differently; he says she said she was up for doing it and felt like she could do it.

“It’s just there’s very little room for error”, he said. Sadly, Daffney thumped her head hard against the ringside floor after being pushed through the table by Abyss. Fyfe made sure to say that all of the workers involved made things as safe as they could given the circumstances, but it was still unfortunate that Spruill had been injured during a spot that easily could've been cut without anybody noticing.

Those are the risks pro wrestlers take.

Foley regrets the way things transpired now. “Looking back, I wish we had made a different call”, he told VICE's cameras. However, being fair, Shannon had told him that she'd be cool taking the hit, and it's hardly like Abyss was reckless when shoving her. Tragically, that fall broke one of Spruill's arms and caused serious issues for her going forwards.

It was a routine spot (if plunging through a barbed wire table can ever be described as routine!) gone wrong, and everybody felt bad that Daffney had got hurt. At first, most (including Foley) just assumed it was a broken bone that'd heal up. There was concern, but not for Spruill's life.
