13 Things We Learned From Dark Side Of The Ring: The Original Sheik

6. What Prompted Sabu To Start Training

Understandably, VICE gave Sabu the floor to talk about his uncle and wax lyrical about his own legacy in groups like ECW where appropriate. The timing of this couldn't have been spookier, but Sabu came out looking really good. You really can't say that about a lot of people on 'Dark Side Of The Ring' - especially when they're pro wrestlers of any note.

The stories they focus on tend to be grim, after all.

There was a bleak start to Sabu reminiscing about how he broke into the wrestling business. He remembered the times when The Sheik would come over to the house specifically to beat up his father for being abusive towards his mother. One day, his dad caught wind that Ed was on the way and hid under the bed. That struck a chord with Sabu. He couldn't believe that somebody could be scary enough to make another grown man hide that way.

He began looking at Sheik as more of a father figure than his own dad. Then, a violent nightclub incident and some shattered teeth made Sabu 100% sure that he wanted to follow his uncle's lead. Once he got out of hospital, he called Sheik up and asked to get the ball rolling on training.

Sheik moved the kid into his house, which he called “camp”, for a year and Sabu trained relentlessly. Farhat's only warning was: “Don’t bitch when it hurts”. Sabu set a ring up in the morning and tore it down every single night. When he wasn't training to wrestle, he'd do a lot of chores around the house out of respect.
