13 Things We Learned From Finn Balor On Talk Is Jericho

10. The Origins Of His Ring Name

Chris inquires about his original ring name of Prince Devitt and asks for the story behind it, and he replies that it's something that the NJPW office came up with. Initially he had been using his real name of Fergal, but the Japanese had problems pronouncing it, so his name was going to be King Devitt - which he hated - but apparently someone decided that at just 24 years of age he wasn't quite seasoned enough to be a king (tell that to the people of Westeros) and changed it to Prince. When he came to WWE, he had a few ideas in mind for his new name, and the office was looking for something that Gaelic inspired. In Celtic lore, Balor is the name of a one-eyed demon God of death, which, aside from sounding bad*ss, perfectly fits the demonic persona of his special ring entrances. Finn is the name of Balor's rival - he describes him as the babyface - as well as being the name that his father goes by. When they sat down to go over names, both he and Triple H were drawn to the name Finn Balor and the decision was easy. It's nice to know that he had such input into his new moniker, as it seems most guys are just given random names with no real thought or meaning behind them at all.
