The 2000s in WWE were not exactly the high point for women’s wrestling, and this match is the icing on the cake. Without a match scheduled for WrestleMania 25, WWE announced that there would be a battle royal to honor the history of women in the company, and crown the first ever Miss WrestleMania.

With no participants announced beforehand, fans were left wondering what WWE legends would return to take part in the battle royal. Once the 23 women entered the ring, via a Snoop Dogg mini concert, it was revealed the field was quite underwhelming. With that, there were still several solid options to win the match; returning legends like Sunny, Molly Holly and Torrie Wilson, current stars such as Beth Phoenix, Mickie Hames and Melina, or even the safe option in Divas Champion Maryse.

None of that was to be, as WWE decided to have the match meant to showcase the history of women in the company be won by a man, Santino Marella, dressed in drag. Not a great look for WWE, who were still several years away from the Women’s Revolution.
