AJ Styles had one of the best debuts in WWE history at the 2016 Royal Rumble. He followed that up with solid matches against The Miz and Chris Jericho, creating budding rivalries against the two. The Phenomenal One and Y2J would have three matches, culminating in an excellent tiebreaker at Fastlane where Styles would win the bout and seemingly their feud. The next night, they agreed to team up, forming the comically short pairing of Y2AJ. After three weeks as a team, the first ever Undisputed Champion would turn on the former Bullet Club leader, leading to a blow off match at WrestleMania 32.

The winner of this match, at least on paper, should have been straightforward. AJ Styles, only three months into his WWE career could have really used a big win on a massive stage like his first WrestleMania. On the other hand, Chris Jericho had proven he was able to stay strong even after WrestleMania loses to the likes of CM Punk and even the debuting Fandango in recent years.

With all that, Vince McMahon still went with the decision to have Jericho pick up the win against The Phenomenal One. Thankfully this was only a bump on the road for an otherwise successful run in WWE for AJ Styles
