14 Wrestling Shoot Stories You Won't Believe

8. The Brains Behind WrestleMania?

Honky Tonk Man is one of the most frequent guests of the various shoot companies and is well known for speaking his mind, regardless of how much validity lies behind the stories he spews. He€™s always good for an entertaining interview and his outspoken nature and unwillingness to tow the company line to maintain favor is one of the reasons why we never see him making WWE cameos or being discussed for the Hall of Fame. One of his many far-fetched tales involves former wrestler €œDr. D.€ David Schultz. Schultz was a guy who probably should have been a bigger star but the incident where he went upside John Stossel€™s head for daring to question the legitimacy of wrestling torpedoed his career. HTM claims that David was the originator behind the entire idea of WrestleMania, all the way down to the name and making it a star-studded affair. When it came time for the event to take place, Honky says that Schultz intended to disrupt The War To Settle The Score show between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper so that he could replace Hot Rod and take what he felt was his rightful place in the main event of the inaugural show against Hogan. For what it€™s worth, the WrestleMania concept has been attributed to several different people though the years. WWE claims that it was Howard Finkel who came up with the name, while Dave Meltzer has reported the credit goes to a little known former employee of World Class Championship Wrestling. The thing about Honky Tonk Man is that he spins his yarns with such conviction that you really want to believe him.
