Christian’s third reign with the Intercontinental title ended in September 2003 when he was beaten by Rob Van Dam in a ladder match. His fourth reign wouldn’t come until May 2012 when he defeated Cody Rhodes at Over the Limit. After winning a battle royal for a shot at either the US or the Intercontinental title, Christian chose the latter, winning the strap once again and breaking William Regal’s record.

What took him so long to recapture the gold? Certainly one factor was his lengthy run in TNA, during which he won their world title twice, as well as his 2011 program with Randy Orton that saw him win WWE’s World Heavyweight Title twice (albeit briefly).
