1. Shawn Michaels
It goes without saying that Shawn Michaels had the full package: he was extraordinary in the ring, could talk up a storm and he had the charisma to bring it all together. He showed great commitment in each of his matches, which makes it come as no surprise that some of the best stories told inside the squared circle were by The Heartbreak Kid. There are countless examples of where HBK proved himself as arguably the best wrestling storyteller of all time, from his initial run in WWF, his return from a back injury in 2001, right to the day he retired at WrestleMania XXVI in 2010. The two matches that come to mind for me, however, are his brutal encounter with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 22, and when he forced Ric Flair into retirement at WrestleMania XXIV in 2008. When recalling Shawn Michaels greatest matches of all time, the Street Fight from WrestleMania 22 doesnt cross many peoples minds. It wasnt a technical masterpiece, sure, but it was one of HBKs most emotional performances on the grandest stage of them all. McMahon had put HBK through hell for the last half-year, and he finally got justice on this night in Chicago, delivering the punishment that we all wanted Vince to receive. Shawn Michaels could have ended the match way earlier if he wanted to, but it wouldnt have made the performance nearly as satisfying if hed wrapped up as soon as possible. He made McMahon pay for every one of his sins and then some, and it was a thrill to watch. The match with Flair was a much different flavour, albeit even more emotionally draining. Michaels vowed to put his mentor down like old yeller, and kept that promise. 'The Showstopper' was torn between the decision to let Flair's legacy live, and to pull the trigger, as it were, and that beautifully captured Im sorry, I love you moment just prior to delivering an emphatic superkick still resonates as some of the best storytelling in wrestling. A beautiful moment that serves as merely an example of why Shawn Michaels is one of the most worthy individuals of his spot in the WWE Hall of Fame. Do you agree with this ranking?
